Central Prague Hotels on or Around Republic Square

Central Prague Hotels on and Around Republic Square

Republic Square hosts many central Prague hotels but people don’t realise how close this area is to the Old Town i.e. it borders it. So you have the advantage of having central Prague hotels and apartment options but without the Old Town premium. The area is very cosmopolitan with a fairly large pedestrianised square (with tram line) and dominated by three buildings i.e. the Paladium Shopping centre, the Municipal House and the Kings Court Hotel. Below you’ll find my favourites in each class.

5 Star Central Prague Hotels – The Grand Mark

prague hotel grand mark view from garden at night

This was previously called the Kempinski Hybernska Palace and is the grandest of the central Prague hotels in the area. It’s where “historical” and “contemporary” come together i.e. they ripped the guts out of a 400 year old building to make it more modern. Superior class is a modern single room. Grand Deluxe class has a separate living room. They have four different types of suite including the split-level duplex apartments.

Very nice garden area to recover from hot weather and often being partly used for private functions. Also on-site is an award winning restaurant.

5 Star – Hotel Imperial

Also known as Art Deco Hotel Imperial. This is what a 14 million pound refit will get you. Elegant and luxurious rarely apply to the standard rooms but… they do here. Of all the new 5 stars that have opened this is by far my favourite. Hi-spec rooms which increase in size, spec, and extras as you pay more (mind you there’s not a great difference between a double deluxe and a suite). The sauna and a steam bath are free for guests. All rooms are decorated with expensive fabrics and have a laptop-size safe. The hotel is a must visit for Art Deco fans.

5 Star – Hotel Kings Court

One of the central Prague hotels located right next to the Municipal House (which was built on the site of the old Royal Court before Prague Castle was built, hence the name of the hotel). Front facing rooms overlook Republic Square which is pedestrianised but has tram lines. Side facing rooms have a view to the Municipal House building/shops view (pedestrianised dead-end street). Rear facing rooms overlook the courtyard. Different categories of rooms and suites. Executive rooms and above have complimentary wellness access (gym, sauna, jacuzzi) otherwise the gym is free for all guests. Guests can also ask to see the conference room which was formerly a ballroom (original decor).

4 Star – Grand Majestic Plaza

Don’t get this mixed up with the Best Western “Majestic Plaza”. Definitely at the top end of this class. Opened in 2010 as part of the “Worldwide” chain of hotels. Room sizes are pretty good. Hotel attracts conference traffic and has an on-site wellness area (Sauna, whirlpool, massage).

The hotel does packages which include your stay, dinner and access to the wellness area. You have a 7 minute walk to the Old Town Square. The hotel is situated in a quiet road.

4 Star – Century Old Town

Located in Na Porici in the same stretch as the Ibis and Atlantic. Part of the Accor group but upgraded to their Mercure “M Gallery” class (lots of art on the walls and tasteful furniture etc). The room size difference between “standard” and “luxury” is about 2 square metres. Its 60 seconds from Republic Square or 6 minutes walk to the Old Town Square. All rooms are airconditioned. The building is a former workplace of Franz Kafka.

4-Star – Hotel Moods

Difficult to place as it is a boutique hotel but I’d put it between 4 and 5 star based on the service and I recommend it only for people who want a clearly modern, eclectic style and a big bed. It has an ultra modern design with Apple multi-media add-ons, air conditioning, on-site massage therapists, anti-allergy bedding and 24 hour breakfasts. Don’t like the mood? just change the music and the lighting colour. Simple. You have a nine minute walk to the Old Town Square.

4 Star – Hotel Embassy

Formerly called the Art Hotel Embassy and located in Petrska it’s a 5 minute walk to Republic Square or 12 minutes to the Old Town Square. Comfortably appointed rooms with armchairs (not just a regular chair). There is a small wellness area (sauna) available for a extra charge.

It’s a fairly quiet location with a couple of nice steak restaurants, an excellent vegetarian and the Art Deco Cafe Imperial within 3 minutes walk.

3 Star – Hotel Axa

swimming pool attached to the prague hotel axa

Located in Na Porici, about a six minute walk from Republic Square and the best choice for people wanting a fitness environment as Axa has the biggest indoor pool of all the central hotels in Prague (25 metres). Front facing rooms overlook the tram line but, windows are sealed. Na Porici is becoming a very cosmopolitan street with several hotels, restaurants and bars opened recently. Axa received a large refurbishment in 2014 but still remains a three star making it good value. The wellness area including pool, gym and sauna is open to the public but guests have discounted entry.

3 Star – Hotel Salvator

A two minute walk from Republic Square. Old style upgraded pension with options for large adjoining rooms for families etc. The Argentinian La Boca steak restaurant is part of the building and there’s a nice outdoor eating area. Still reasonably good value off season but becoming expensive for this class in the main season especially since winning a “Hotel of the year” award in 2014. On-site billiard room in the former sports bar. You have a 7 minute walk to the Old Town Square.
