Prague Tips for the Over 60s
I’ve given “70 or over” senior discounts at https://www.livingpraguetours.com since it started plus with my easy pace and attitude I do get a lot of over-60s on the tours. So I wanted to write a post for anybody to read what discounts and offers may be available in Prague for people aged 60 or over and I’ll be adding to this as time goes by.
Transport
Details are currently at https://pid.cz/en/discounts/#senior but note on the English language page in the 60-65 section it shows 60-70 can travel for discounted price. This is a typo. The options are explained below:
You Are Aged 60 to 64
If you are aged 60 to 64 then you get discounted Prague public transport travel. For this you need to buy a PID card from a DPP Ticket Office. You’ll find a list of locations http://www.dpp.cz/en/list-of-info-centres/ (I prefer Mustek but you’ll find you can do this at the airport or train station up to 9-30pm). You need 1) Your passport and 2) a separate passport-sized photo. At the DPP office you present your passport and photo. After a short time you’ll receive a laminated card which costs CZK20 (at the time of writing). This is now your local ID Card and you’ll keep it with you all the time. You can now use your PID card to buy a discounted travel pass (usually a month pass is CZK138 which is much cheaper that the usual CZK550 and to put it in perspective a regular priced 24 hour pass is currently CZK120 so you are basically getting a month for not much more than I would pay for a day). You do not need to carry your passport as the “PID Card” acts as a valid ID and you keep both the PID Card and the travel pass with you at all times. Alternatively if you have the PID card you can use the discounted tariff on ticket machines i.e. for a day pass that usually costs CZK120 you can buy the CZK60 version.
You Are Aged 65 to 69
If you are aged 65 to 69 then you get free Prague city public transport travel so long as you are carrying an EU National ID Card, an EU Resident permit or your Passport. If you do not wish to carry any of these documents with you then you have the option of buying the PID card explained earlier in the 60-64 section. NOTE that a Driving Licence is NOT valid ID. There are one or two limitations i.e. if you have large luggage like a suitcase then you are still required to buy a luggage ticket (CZK20 at the time of writing). Also this does NOT apply to the Airport Express which although listed as a DPP service it is NOT public transport. This also gives you discounted travel on local Prague “PID” trains.
You Are Aged 70 or Over
If you are aged 70 or over then if you are a non-EU citizen and you carry your passport with you then you get free Prague city public transport. If you are an EU Citizen/Resident then you have the option of using your Passport, National ID card or National Resident Permit (note that a driving licence is NOT a valid form of ID). There are one or two limitations i.e. if you have large luggage like a suitcase then you are still required to buy a luggage ticket (CZK20 at the time of writing). Also this does NOT apply to the Airport Express which although listed as a DPP service it is NOT public transport. This also gives you free travel on local Prague “PID” trains. Senior Discounts
In Prague a “Senior” discount normally kicks in aged 65 but it varies. In all cases you will be asked for proof of age at the time of buying a product and in some cases when you are redeeming a product. In most cases it’s up to 50% discount but some are even more generous. Strangely the Jewish Museum does NOT offer a senior discount. Examples of Senior Discounts include:

The Prague Castle offers a 50% discount for people who use a passport to prove that they are aged 65 or over.
National Theatre https://www.narodni-divadlo.cz/en/news/the-national-theatre-for-seniors-en which has a general 50% discount for 65 and over plus they offer special senior tickets for specific performances.
National Gallery https://www.ngprague.cz/ (45% Discount on individual temporary exhibitions). Plus you can get the same discount on the general Permanent Exhibition entry which includes Convent of St Agnes, Trade Fair Palace, Sternberg Palace and Salm Palace.
Old Town Hall Museum and Tower (40% discount)
