September, My Favourite Time of Year
Photo: Bethlehem Chapel, Bethlehem Square
I'm often asked when is the best time to come to Prague and it's not an easy answer to give. If it comes down to a weather question then without doubt September is one of the months that I would visit the city. The trees are still green, days are warm, evenings can still be balmy and there's no night frost so mornings are fresh and comfortable. It's definitely a case of bring jeans but pack a pair of shorts as well.
In Prague
9-11 monument - People visiting Prague on 9/11 may be interested to know that we have a memorial to the firefighters. If you have walked across Charles Bridge from the Old Town then exit on the Lesser Town side to the right and work your way back down and under the bridge. Immediately on your right after going under the bridge you will find the 9/11 monument.
Motorway Advertising - If you are travelling on motorways in Czech you cannot fail to spot literally hundreds of boards with a Czech flag on them. The government that allowed roadside advertising for years changed it's mind about the proximity of the boards to the roads and now prohibits advertising within 250 metres of the motorway. The advertising board company Czech Outdoor has simply replaced all it's advertising posters with Czech flags.
Old Town Hall Renovation
The Calendarium has been removed for renovation. The tower is now closed for renovation and the whole tower is now covered by scaffolding. At the time of writing the "Apostle march" was still working and the Astronomical Clock was still in place and working for the hourly procession.
Walking Tours
As the kids are now back at school the scheduled tours are back to 9am, 12pm and 3pm but private tours can be arranged at any time. Hopefully that's the hottest part of the year now over as city touring in the mid-30 degrees can be a little tiring for many travellers.
One of the memorable tours (they are all memorable in their own way) was a mixed US/UK group with parents, teenagers and smaller kids pictured. Any tour guide will tell you that it can be a real challenge to keep everybody interested especially with age differences but we all had fun.
What's Been Happening on the Site
Squeezed in a holiday in August so slightly reduced content.
Sometimes I just go where the flow takes me so I've created a new category called "Community" which will contain posts about things which directly impact on people living in Prague. So I wrote three posts about different aspects of what it is like to be homeless in Prague. The first is "Novy Prostor" which in England would be called "The Big Issue" and is a street paper sold by homeless and otherwise socially challenged people (I took one part of this post and made it into a post of it's own called Buy a Homeless Person Lunch) and this is one of my page picks below. The second is "HoBohemia" which is about an investigation of the dynamics of being homeless. The third post is "The Hermes Boat" which is permanently moored on the river Vltava and is a specially renovated boat for the purposes of providing a safe place to sleep. Check the BLOG to see the latest posts on the site.
I've started adding my old photo galleries again so you can see a selection of more than 100 photos on the Livingprague Photo Galleries page. This will be updated.
I usually keep the pages and posts updated where possible but it was not always clear to people when the last update was done. I'm now introducing code each time I update a page or post so that it clearly shows the viewer when I last updated it.
I've now archived all of the newsletters from 2017 so you can open whichever takes your fancy from the section further down this newsletter.
