August, Ciao Bella

Photo: ST Nicholas Church, Old Town Square

It's well known that August is the month when Czechs and Italians seem to swap countries so expect lot's of hand-waving and more than a few "Ciao Bella" from the younger guys. People coming to the city will have noted that August is the hottest month of the year here so air conditioned rooms are at a premium. Carry a bottle of water with you and keep hydrated. Add a bit of extra salt to food on hot days.

In Prague

Crazy Guy - On July 24th a guy with a well known criminal history walked into the DAVE Western Guns shop just off Wenceslas Square and proceeded to try and stab a sales assistant. The owner of the shop then shot the guy who later died. He was probably unaware that the shop owner was a former European champion in Western fast draw shooting competition!!

No Smoking - Anyone with a booking at Apartment Hotel Julis on Wenceslas Square might want to confirm if it's still ok after a fire broke out in the building. Not much in the way of fire damage but a fair amount of smoke.

Old Town Hall Renovation

The Calendarium has been removed for renovation. The tower is now closed for renovation and the whole tower is now covered by scaffolding. At the time of writing the "Apostle march" was still working and the Astronomical Clock was still in place and working for the hourly procession.

Naplavka Riverside Market

Naplavka has always been one of my summer places to go (only on Saturday though) but people don't often realise that there is a little Flea Market there as well just 100 metres upriver on the barge called "Avoid". Find details on the Naplavka Market page.

Prague Pride

Prague's Gay Pride week is in August. We don't have a defined gay area in the city so enjoy the parade and have fun in the bars and clubs later. More on the Prague Pride page.

Walking Tours

The scheduled tours are still at 10am and 1pm but the last month saw an increase in both private tours AND clients who were doing a guided tour for the first time. Tour pic of the month is an American family with 3 kids who did both the Old Town and Jewish Quarter PLUS the City Overview PLUS the Prague Castle extension. Always nice to show a family around the city.

What's Been Happening on the Site

July was a fairly busy month for new content with 14 posts and a video. There's a lot of information in the website but I felt that I would present it in a slightly different way i.e. based on the month of the year. So the major content of the month was to create 12 posts, one for each month that would cover things like "what to pack", "eating and drinking" and "festivals and things to do" (often specific only for that month). These posts will be kept updated and will now be a standard part of this newsletter and "Prague in August" is one of my page picks below. I published the Signal Light Festival page as that will be on in October. And finally I published the Baby Box page which you'll find as one of my 3 page picks for this month. The video is a look at David Černy's Kafka's Head sculpture and shows a few of the mechanical variations so check out that on the Livingprague YouTube Channel (and subscribe if you want!!!)
I changed the homepage content as well. Basically since January I'd gone with a static page with navigation options. I've now changed that to show the regular navigation options PLUS the last 15 posts that I have published on the site.
